December Home Maintenance in northern New Jersey

December is detector month: every smoke and carbon monoxide detector gets tested and fresh batteries, right as heating season, fireplace season, and candle season all peak.

The rest of the visit gets the house holiday-ready: disposal cleaned and deodorized, fireplace glass polished, and the problem doors and squeaks fixed before guests arrive.

On the December checklist

  • Test/replace smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries
  • Test/replace garage door keypad batteries
  • Inspect humidifier water panel. Descale/replace as needed.
  • Clean/sanitize kitchen sink garbage disposal
  • Empty/clean washing machine drain pump filter (accessible filters only)
  • Clean fireplace glass as needed
  • Adjust/lubricate problem doors, hinges and/or locks
  • Monitor softener salt and furnace filter. Fill/replace as needed.
  • Visual inspection of home exterior addressing vent/air intake obstructions
  • As time allows, address items on homeowner's to-do list. See list of common services below.
