Handyman and Home Maintenance in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey
A very small borough with a very old housing stock, where a lot of the work is careful repair of original material rather than replacement.
The houses in Ho-Ho-Kus
Ho-Ho-Kus is one square mile with an unusually high concentration of genuinely old houses, including pre-Revolutionary stone and a great deal of nineteenth and early twentieth century construction, alongside 1950s and 1960s infill. In the old half you find wide-plank floors, plaster over lath, single-glazed wood sash and hardware that has no modern equivalent.
The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook runs through the borough and the older houses sit close to it on mature, heavily planted lots. Low ground plus old masonry means damp is the recurring theme, in basements, at grade, and on shaded north walls.
What we see most in Ho-Ho-Kus
Original material is worth saving
On a house of this age the right move is usually repair, not replacement. A door that binds gets planed and rehung rather than swapped. A cracked plaster ceiling gets keyed and skimmed. Work that treats old fabric as disposable takes value out of the house.
Damp at grade
Older foundations on low ground near the brook mean efflorescence on basement walls, sticking basement doors in humid months, and exterior trim near grade that stays wet. Keeping caulk lines and paint intact at the bottom three feet of the house does more than anything else here.
Hardware with no modern equivalent
Mortise locks, rim latches, casement stays and sash hardware that cannot be bought at a big-box store. Most of it works again after cleaning, lubrication and adjustment, which is a maintenance task rather than a purchase.
Small borough, tight scheduling
Ho-Ho-Kus is compact enough that a technician working here is minutes from the rest of the Pascack and Ridgewood area, which makes recurring short visits practical in a way they are not in a spread-out township.
