Ramsey has a genuine old downtown with pre-war houses around it, and a much larger postwar ring of Capes, ranches and split levels built out through the 1950s and 1960s, plus newer construction toward the northern edge. The older homes bring plaster and wood sash; the postwar majority bring first-generation drywall, original interior doors and kitchens and baths on their second or third refresh.
The borough has two rail stations and a commercial spine along Route 17, but the residential streets are quiet and well treed. Ground rises toward the north and west, and the older sections near the brook run damp.
