Fair Lawn is largely a postwar borough of Capes, ranches and Colonials, with the significant exception of Radburn, the 1929 planned community whose houses face interior greens rather than streets. The postwar majority have first-generation drywall, original interior doors, single-car garages and kitchens on their second update. Radburn homes are older, smaller, and carry original detail worth preserving.
Flat to gently rolling, with the Passaic River along the western edge and Memorial Park at the center. Street trees are mature and lots are regular, which makes exterior work predictable and efficient.

Radburn is not the rest of the borough
A Radburn house faces a common green, has its service side to the road, and carries original 1929 detail. Work here should respect the plan, and it is genuinely different from working on a 1952 Cape four blocks away.
A whole borough at the same age
When most of the housing goes up within fifteen years of each other, it fails on the same schedule. Right now that means original steel and aluminum window hardware, seventy-year-old interior doors, and the second generation of kitchen and bath finishes all reaching the end together.
Cape upstairs
Fair Lawn has a great many Capes, and the dormered upstairs is where the small jobs collect: knee-wall doors, sloped-ceiling cracks and window sash that binds in the humid months.
Single-car garages doing the work of three
Postwar garages were sized for a postwar car and a lawnmower. Shelving, clearing and getting the overhead door running properly is among the highest-value four-hour visits in the borough.
